Artist's Comments

I After I completed my Tigers painting, I wanted to give my technical painting capacities a kick in the pants and do something a bit more detailed. I kinda startled myself and a few other people, as it looked a bit like I did it in colored pencil instead of watercolor.

Watercolors so precisely placed, the result is very much like color-pencils. Jackal by ~Beowulf-Kennedy is a beautiful reproduction of a jackal in it's natural setting. (Suggested by ~Methylate and Featured by `oedalis)

You mean like, this is watercolor only? o.O "Startled" is a definite understatement here. :+fav: The play of light and shadow is outstanding, not to mention the jackal itself. *stares at the fur unbelievingly* How large is the original piece?
:iconbeowulf-kennedy:
The origional is 14x10 inches. I tend to work that size alot since I already have a buncha stretchers at that size and its really easy to buy 11x15inch pads of 140 lb. paper, you know? The only real exceptions to that rule are God of War, and Advance scouts, which are CONSIDERABLY bigger =O! I have only one other painting that isnt 10x14 inches, aside from those two, but I gotta get a digi made of it before i can show it to the world. Thattl be comin' up soon.

Glad you like the pic, though, bud :). I paint for personal enjoyment, but its so much better when you can make stuff that other people like, too! :3 It makes my day that I made your day! :D
:iconbviking:
DAMN !!! From the thumb I thought it was a pic... :O

same here. You are a very very talented artist. I wish i could draw/paint/sketch/photoshop like that, but im just a mediocre writer, despite the reviews i've read. -sigh- Im putting you on DevWatch

Glad you like, man! :)

Since its watercolor you really kinda have to work in layers. Most who do so either do just that in one of two ways, really- either they go from light to dark in progressive washes or lay down the darkest darks first and, again, build up the lights to meet the darkest shades, the former of the two methods being the one I used. Just layer after layer of small brushstrokes building up color over time. T's what brings out that sorta colored-pencil look, what with all the hatching for coloring. Not including the stretching of the canvas and the preliminary linework, the whole thing took me a little less than 15 hours of work in one week over the summer of 2003. Including, about 16.

Thankyou very much for your tips! I've done layers before and they work well but I guess it'll just take some practice to get that kind of detail down. Good job again. :D
